About the ingredients
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a stable form of the amino acid L-cysteine. In plain terms: NAC's recognised, authoritative uses in the UK are medicinal. It is the hospital antidote — given intravenously — for paracetamol overdose, and the mucolytic class it belongs to is one NICE says may be considered within NHS care for a long-standing chesty cough in COPD. NAC is also sold as an oral food supplement, including by Camden Medicals — but that is a separate regulatory question the UK Food Standards Agency has not settled, and there are no GB-authorised health claims for NAC. This entry leads with what UK and EU bodies actually say (see the guidance section), then presents the underlying research beneath it. Read more in the encyclopaedia
