Kelp (brown seaweed)
Kelp is the common name for several large brown seaweeds, most commonly Ascophyllum nodosum (UK / Atlantic coasts), Laminaria digitata, Saccharina japonica, and Fucus vesiculosus (bladderwrack). In supplements, kelp is sold primarily as an iodine source. UK iodine intake is borderline-low in some demographic groups (especially pregnant and reproductive-age women), so a well-defined iodine source has a place in modern nutrition. The central problem with kelp specifically is that natural iodine content varies enormously between species, harvest sites, and batches — published assays of UK kelp supplements have found iodine content ranging from far below to far above the label declaration. Batch-tested standardised iodine is the responsible standard.

What it is
Kelp is a colloquial term for large brown seaweeds in several genera. The species commonly used in UK food supplements include Ascophyllum nodosum (knotted wrack, abundant on UK Atlantic coasts), Laminaria digitata (oarweed, sugar kelp's relative), Saccharina japonica (kombu, used in East Asian cuisine), and Fucus vesiculosus (bladderwrack). Naturopathic literature often uses "kelp" interchangeably with bladderwrack; species naming matters because iodine content and other minerals differ significantly between them.
The supplement-relevant fraction of kelp is iodine, plus smaller amounts of other minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc), fucoidan polysaccharides, alginate, and trace organic compounds (laminarin, fucoxanthin). Iodine in kelp exists as inorganic iodide salts and as organically bound iodine; both are bioavailable.
The clinical-supplement question is iodine delivery, not "kelp extract" delivery. A 500 mg kelp powder might deliver anywhere from 50 µg to 5 mg of iodine depending on species and batch — a 100-fold range. Responsible manufacturers batch-test iodine and declare a guaranteed maximum and minimum on the spec sheet.

How it works
Iodine is a structural component of the thyroid hormones T₃ (triiodothyronine) and T₄ (thyroxine). Iodide ion is concentrated by the thyroid follicle via the sodium-iodide symporter, incorporated into thyroglobulin via thyroid peroxidase, and released as T₃ / T₄ on demand. The thyroid stores around 80 % of the body's iodine. Adequate intake supports normal thyroid hormone synthesis; insufficient intake produces goitre and hypothyroidism; sudden excess can produce a transient surge of T₃/T₄ release in susceptible individuals (Jod-Basedow phenomenon) or a paradoxical inhibition of synthesis (Wolff-Chaikoff effect) lasting days.
