What it is

Magnesium stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid (C17H35COOH). It is a fine white powder, slightly greasy to the touch. Two molecules of stearic acid are bound to one magnesium ion.
In supplement and pharmaceutical manufacture it is used to keep powders flowing during high-speed tabletting — it coats granules so they do not stick to the dies or to each other. Without a lubricant of this kind, most modern tablet production lines would not run.
The stearic-acid component is a long-chain saturated fatty acid that occurs naturally in many vegetable and animal fats. Commercial supply chains today are dominated by plant-derived sources (palm and other vegetable oils) for cost and consistency, though tallow (animal) grades remain in use. The label rarely specifies the source — if vegan or halal certification matters, the manufacturer is the only reliable source of confirmation.

How it works

During tabletting, magnesium stearate functions as a boundary lubricant on the surface of granules and on the metal dies. It is added at the final blending step in tiny amounts — too much and the tablet becomes soft or its dissolution is delayed; too little and the production line seizes up.
The mass of magnesium stearate present in a typical tablet is in fractions of a milligram per dose. The magnesium contribution to total daily intake is negligible at this level.
