Hypromellose (HPMC)
HPMC — short for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, also called hypromellose — is a plant-derived material used as a vegan capsule shell, a tablet binder, and a controlled-release matrix in modified-release supplements. It is the most common alternative to gelatin in UK vegan supplements.

What it is
Hypromellose (HPMC, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) is a chemically modified form of cellulose — the structural carbohydrate that makes up plant cell walls. The starting material is purified cellulose from wood pulp or cotton; methyl and hydroxypropyl groups are added at controlled positions on the cellulose chain to give the finished material its solubility, gelling, and film-forming properties.
Different grades of HPMC differ in how heavily substituted they are and in molecular weight. Capsule-shell grades are chosen for their fast dissolution at body temperature (typically within 10–15 minutes). Modified-release grades are chosen for controlled hydration and a predictable release profile over hours.
HPMC carries no animal-derived inputs at any stage, which is why it is the de-facto vegan alternative to gelatin. It is acceptable to vegans, vegetarians, Muslims (halal-acceptable without separate certification), and observant Jews (kosher-acceptable without separate certification).

How it works
In a capsule shell, HPMC dissolves in the gastric environment within minutes, releasing the contents like a gelatin shell would.
In a modified-release tablet, HPMC forms a hydrated gel layer on the tablet surface as water penetrates. The active ingredient diffuses through this gel layer at a controlled rate, spreading dosing over several hours rather than minutes. This is the mechanism that makes "extended-release" or "sustained-release" supplements possible.
HPMC is essentially non-absorbed in the gut — it passes through as a soluble fibre and contributes a small amount of bulk. The nutritional contribution is negligible at the small amounts present in a capsule shell or tablet.
