Acerola (Malpighia glabra), also called the Barbados or West Indies cherry, is a small tropical fruit with one of the highest vitamin C contents of any food by weight. Acerola fruit powder is widely used in supplements as a natural source of vitamin C.

What it is

Acerola (Malpighia glabra, sometimes M. emarginata) is a small red tropical fruit native to the Caribbean and parts of Central and South America. It is among the densest dietary sources of vitamin C by weight — fresh fruit can contain over 1,500 mg of vitamin C per 100 g.

In supplements, acerola appears as a freeze-dried fruit powder or as a standardised extract. The commercial powder is typically standardised to a stated vitamin C percentage (often 17–25%); the resulting per-dose vitamin C content is what determines whether the supplement meets the UK NRV threshold for vitamin C health claims.

Acerola also contains other plant compounds — anthocyanins, carotenoids, polyphenols — at much smaller absolute amounts.

Acerola vs camu camu — what's the difference?

Both are South American fruits with very high natural vitamin C content. Acerola (Malpighia emarginata, West Indian cherry) is more widely cultivated and supplemented; camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) carries even higher vitamin C levels per fresh fruit weight. From a nutritional standpoint at supplement doses, the choice is essentially a sourcing / preference question — both deliver vitamin C; both also carry small amounts of plant polyphenols.

Is acerola safe in pregnancy?

Acerola at supplement doses that deliver vitamin C around the UK adult RNI (40 mg/day) — and the slightly raised pregnancy figure of 50 mg/day — is generally regarded as safe. Avoid high-dose acerola extracts (delivering >500 mg/day vitamin C) in pregnancy without your midwife or GP''s advice — that is a vitamin C dose question, not an acerola question.
